BELAGA, Aug 7: Rebecca Lu Yann Ru, 22, from Uma Kulit Long Mitik and Rigerbert Jarap, 21, from Rh Kejaman Long Segaham, have been crowned ‘keligit’ and ‘belawan’ of this year’s Belaga Regatta.
To be recognised as the young faces and talents of Belaga, the two need to look good and confident and be knowledgeable in the Orang Ulu culture.
Rebecca and Rigerbert had emerged as champions among their peers after defeating the other nine finalists in their respective categories.
The ten finalists were selected based on evaluations from three contests which included individual interviews, photo shooting sessions, and finally, the talent round where ‘keligit’ candidates were asked to weave and ‘belawan’ candidates were tasked to tie a hook tie.
The final test was to dress in the full Orang Ulu costume of their choice and present themselves at the Belaga Regatta 2023 closing ceremony held at Belaga Waterfront last night (Aug 6).
Rebecca showcased her Kenyah costume gracefully, while Rigerbert exhibited his Kajang-Kejaman costume and impactful warrior dance.
By the night’s end, the ‘keligit’ and ‘belawan’ champions each brought RM1,200 cash prizes, a trophy and a winner sash. — DayakDaily
