KUCHING, Oct 15: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to officialise its participation in the UNICEF’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative.

MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the MoU signing ceremony would be held on World Children’s Day (Nov 20) at a venue to be decided soon.

He said that Kuching South would contribute to protecting and ensuring children’s growth in a safe and healthy environment through this initiative.

“It’s also a network that brings together the government and other stakeholders such as the civil society organisations, private sector, academia, media, and importantly, the children who wish to make their cities and communities more child-friendly,” he said.

Wee said the council is serious about pursuing this initiative as the world is becoming more advanced and developed.

There is definitely a need to protect and ensure the children are brought up in a very safe and secure environment, he added.

Amidst the focus on Kuching being recognised as a smart city or a green city, he urged the public not to ignore the children’s rights.

“I hope that all of you will support us because protecting children is our responsibility as adults.

“The children are the future assets,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk Facebook live session today.
