KUCHING, March 12: There will only be one Ramadan bazaar planned in Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) jurisdiction this year, designated at the Stutong Market.
This year, the holy month of Ramadan is expected to begin on April 2 and come to a close on May 1.
MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng announced this during his 102nd ShallWeeTalk live session today.
Touching on the highly anticipated annual Kuching Festival, which had been cancelled the previous two years due to Covid-19, Wee explained a committee would be set up and start meeting this month on the matter.
“The committee will have to study and discuss whether to hold a hybrid or drive-in festival while evaluating the Covid-19 situation along the way.
“But after a two-year hiatus, I believe there are certain events or activities which can be held, and it is just a matter of how to do it safely.
“While I am equally concerned about the pandemic, at the same time, we cannot just stop there, for we have been living in and manoeuvring through the pandemic for more than two years now,” he shared.
Wee, however, pointed out that the festival will most likely return this year, and good planning and organisation will be essential to put on an event that is both safe and enjoyable amidst the pandemic.
“Maybe we can do a hybrid or drive through or limit the crowd, but we may face some problems due to the many entrances and exits around the venue.
“But we hope to be able to finalise the direction of the festival by the end of this month (March),” he added. ― DayakDaily
