KUCHING, May 3: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is planning to convert two existing badminton courts at its Sport Village into dedicated pickleball courts, as part of a pilot initiative to cater to the sport’s surging popularity.
As a city council that promotes active and healthy living, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasised the commitment in providing facilities that meet evolving recreational needs.
“Often dubbed the ‘in sport’ of the moment, pickleball is becoming a trend not only in Kuching but globally.
“With more people becoming health-conscious, MBKS is focused on transforming Kuching South into a city that embraces healthier lifestyles through accessible and inclusive infrastructure,” he said in a statement today.
In response to the rising interest in pickleball—a fast-growing racquet sport gaining traction among people of all ages, Wee, alongside councillors Chai Ju Loon, Albert Tay and Andy Tan, visited the pickleball court at the Tabuan Laru Family Club to study its layout, dimensions, and playing surface.
During the visit, they also engaged with representatives from the Tabuan Laru Family Club to explore plans for organising the inaugural Mayor’s Pickleball Cup as part of the Kuching Festival 2025 to further promote the sport among local residents and visitors.
“We’re starting small to study the demand. If we observe high usage and positive community feedback, we’ll look into converting more pickleball courts,” he added.
MBKS’s move reflects its ongoing commitment to proactive and people-centric recreational planning that aligns with the city’s vision for a vibrant, health-oriented community. — DayakDaily
