KUCHING, May 3: Members of the public are strongly advised to exercise extra caution when using the bridge along Jalan Stakan, near the badminton courts, following the discovery of a sinkage at the section connecting the road to the bridge.
Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen said he was alerted to the issue around 9pm last night by a resident who noticed the sunken portion at the bridge-road junction.
Recognising the potential danger to motorists, he immediately contacted Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Art Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak director Ir Dr Cassidy Morris.
“I wish to express my gratitude to the JKR Sarawak director for acting swiftly to deploy engineers to assess the site. I also thank both State ministers for their immediate responses to my WhatsApp message regarding the complaint,” he said in a statement today.

He noted that a preliminary inspection was carried out late last night, followed by a site visit this morning by his service team members Nethiyananthar @ John and Ting Kee Kai, who observed that red tape and warning signs had been placed to alert road users of the hazard.
“We hope an official announcement on the structural integrity of the bridge will be made soon, and that repair works will follow quickly. This is an important route connecting the 7th Mile bazaar to Muara Tuang Road,” he stressed.
Until then, Chong urged members of the public to steer clear of the affected section as a precautionary measure for their safety. — DayakDaily
