KUCHING, April 29: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will consider reimposing mask mandates, especially in hawker centres and markets within its jurisdiction, if the daily Covid-19 cases in the city increase.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said that mask-wearing, especially in crowded public places, is necessary to protect the community and help contain the spread of Covid-19.

“Everybody has gotten used to wearing face masks as it is a new norm. But of course, we cannot force people to do so, but we should all put them on when in crowded places.

“This is for the safety and health of oneself and our community,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk live session today.

This came following Federal Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa’s earlier proposal to make face masks mandatory in schools again to prevent a surge in Covid-19 cases from the new XBB.1.16 subvariant, also known as Arcturus.

While it will not be compulsory for students to wear face masks when they return to school next week, Dr Zaliha encouraged students to do so.

She will also meet Education Minister Fadhlinak to discuss the guidelines and standard operating procedure for students, which will be issued before school reopens next week. — DayakDaily
