KUCHING, Oct 15: Figure should never be an issue among ladies when it comes to wearing a cheongsam, the symbolic body-hugging one-piece garment in Chinese culture.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said this to over 300 ladies-in-cheongsam gathered here today at Palmarium Garden for ‘The Portrait of Cheongsam: Timeless Elegance and Legacy’ cheongsam parade.

“Cheongsam highlights elegance and nobility. So, I encourage Chinese women to wear cheongsams more often so that the culture can be passed on.

“Be bold; just wear it. Wear your cheongsam; figure should not be an issue,” he said.

Let more people know about Sarawak’s cheongsam culture, one which is the symbol of world harmony, he added.

‘The Portrait of Cheongsam: Timeless Elegance and Legacy’ is organised by the Sarawak Federation of Chinese Women Association to celebrate the cheongsam culture.

It is supported by MBKS in terms of venue and funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts.

Besides the cheongsam parade, the event also includes activities such as the Adult Cheongsam Competition, children and adult cheongsam fashion shows, cheongsam-related exchange meetings, exhibitions, and demonstrations.
