KUCHING, March 16: The Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) Ramadan bazaar near the Stutong Community Market offers gastronomic ideas while integrating people of all races and religions.

According to MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, this is because although located in a Chinese-majority area, the Muslim community is always welcome and is able to hold their Ramadan bazaar within the vicinity.

“It is a good venue to bring together people irrespective of race and religion,” he said during the distribution of ‘bubur lambuk’ at the bazaar today.

“Here, we can see Muslim vendors selling ‘Bak Chang’, which they renamed ‘Kuih Chang’, and they are also selling ‘Ang Gu Kueh’ (Red Tortoise Cake).

“This also promotes the exchange of information and ideas as the Chinese can also learn how the Malays prepare their food,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was also present, disclosed that vendors and patrons have described the MBKS Ramadan Bazaar as among the cleanest venues.

Dr Sim reiterated that participative operators must continue to adhere to council regulations in terms of health and hygiene when selling their foods.

He also believed that its unique location has made it easier for people from all walks of life to visit the bazaar.

“This is the beauty of Sarawak and her people, which truly reflects our culture and racial harmony in the State. That is why we must visit Ramadan bazaars to experience this unique atmosphere,” he said.

During the event, Dr Sim distributed 500 packets of ‘bubur lambuk’.
