KUCHING, Oct 24: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has advised residents to refrain from sealing the drains outside their houses in order to prevent blockages during heavy rain.
According to Wee, if the drains are sealed, water will not be able to flow properly, potentially causing flooding on the roads.
“Some drains here, I’ve noticed, have been sealed with cement for car parking. When it rains heavily, the water will flow onto the road as the drains have been sealed which is bad for drainage.
“So, we hope that everyone will try not to cover the drains because, once you cover them, the water will not have proper water flow, and in the worst case scenario, if it floods, it will flow into your house,” he said this afternoon in a Facebook livestream during the handover of drainage upgrading projects at Lorong Kedandi 6 and Lorong Keranji 4G here.
He explained that it is preferable to leave some of the drain holes unsealed. This allows for easier maintenance, as workers can easily access and clean the drains when needed.
“Cementing drains is not an appropriate house extension,” he added.
During the site visit, the mayor observed that several drains in the vicinity appeared dilapidated, and the contractors will prioritise repairing the ones that are in the most critical condition. — DayakDaily
