KUCHING, Nov 11: Kuching City South Council (MBKS) has increased the subsidised cost for neutering dogs to RM100 per animal and is targeting 200 dogs under its jurisdiction.

Its mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, said this initiative is a proactive step towards controlling the population of stray dogs and mitigating the spread of rabies.

“The responsibility to curb the rabies outbreak cannot rest solely on the shoulders of authorities as it requires the collective effort of our community, especially pet lovers,” he said.

He told reporters this during a campaign to vaccinate, microchip, and license dogs at the MBKS community hall today.

At the event, Wee said it is a comprehensive initiative to safeguard the health and well-being of the community’s beloved canine companions.

“The event, which encompasses the registration of pets and owners, licensing, dog vaccination, and microchipping, is part of MBKS’ ongoing efforts to combat the rabies outbreak within its jurisdiction.

He said MBKS aims to vaccinate dogs against rabies and ensure their proper licensing and microchipping.

“This holistic approach reflects our dedication to creating a safer and more responsible pet ownership environment,” he said.

Sarawak Society for the Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (SSPCA) president Datin Dona Wee has encouraged neutering pet dogs to not abandon unwanted puppies.

She added that a household is limited to three dogs and that neutering is not as cruel as abandoning unwanted puppies.

“Through neutering, we could also reduce the stray dog population on the streets. If you don’t want to have a growing family of pets, be responsible; neuter and vaccinate them to protect yourself, your family, and pets from rabies,” she said.

She also encouraged microchipping so that if the pet gets lost, the authorities can scan it to identify the owners and contact them. — DayakDaily
