KUCHING, Apr 29: Business-matching programmes, cultural exchange programmes, youth development platforms, joint exhibitions to promote crafts and gastronomy, and knowledge-sharing on sustainable urban development and creative industries were among the initiatives proposed by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng during a courtesy call by a delegation from the Xindu District—known as ‘Fragrant City’—in Chengdu, China, today.
According to a press release, the delegation, led by Xindu deputy district mayor Hu Ian, was in Kuching to explore potential avenues for cooperation between the two cities.
Discussions centred around strengthening ties in areas such as business, cultural exchange, youth development, economic collaboration, crafts, and gastronomy.
“Both sides expressed strong enthusiasm for establishing future cooperation, including the prospect of forming a Friendship City relationship to foster deeper exchanges and mutual growth,” said the press release.
Wee also highlighted the importance of the engagement, expressing a strong desire to deepen the friendship through practical collaborations.
He emphasised that friendship between cities must be nurtured through active and continuous engagement, and he welcomed the delegation’s keen interest in working closely with Kuching South.
“Kuching South is committed to building meaningful partnerships that will benefit not just the two cities economically, but also culturally and socially,” Wee added.
During their visit to Kuching, the Xindu District delegation also visited Fuya Energy Sdn Bhd, where discussions focused on exploring industrial collaboration opportunities.
They also visited the Borneo Cultures Museum and Sarawak Craft Council, gaining deeper insights into Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage and artisanal traditions.
