KUCHING, June 18: A workplace culture rooted in diversity, mutual respect, collaboration, and understanding has enabled Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to make significant strides in delivering services and enhancing the quality of life for city residents, said Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
Speaking at the Segulai Sejalai Gawai Dayak MBKS 2025 celebration held at the MBKS headquarters today, Wee praised the council’s multicultural workforce for their unwavering dedication and unity, which he said were key to the council’s recent accomplishments across engineering, public health, landscaping, and heritage preservation.
“This celebration is a reminder of how diverse and colourful our workplace truly is. At MBKS, we are more than just a council—we are a community made up of people from many races, cultures, and beliefs. And it is this diversity that makes us stronger, more resilient, and more united,” he said in his welcoming remarks.
Themed Segulai Sejalai—meaning “Together in Unity”—the event celebrated the essence of the Gawai Dayak festival while also echoing the council’s core values in public service.
Wee said MBKS’s many achievements over the past year were testament to the strength of its shared vision and teamwork.

Among the key highlights of MBKS’s accomplishments include major engineering upgrades like enhanced drainage systems and city infrastructure to bolster public safety and urban resilience.
“Our public health efforts, including improved sanitation facilities at markets and public toilets, continue to raise the standard of cleanliness and comfort for our residents
“We have also made significant progress in landscape upgrading, especially in our parks and open spaces—introducing better walkways, playgrounds, lighting, and greenery to create safer, more inclusive environments for children, families, and the elderly,” he said.
Wee also mentioned MBKS’ recognition at national and international levels, including its active participation in the Unesco Creative Cities Network and its work in sustainability and heritage conservation.
“These are not just Council-level achievements. They reflect the strength of our team spirit and the dedication of each department and every individual who believes in our shared vision for Kuching South,” he added.
Wee extended his appreciation to all MBKS councillors and staff, particularly those involved in organising the Gawai celebration. He acknowledged their ongoing commitment to ensuring the city functions smoothly, even as they take time to honour important cultural traditions.
“To all our Dayak councillors and staff, I wish you a joyful and meaningful Gawai Dayak celebration. May this season be filled with happiness, good health, and cherished moments with your families and loved ones. Selamat Ari Gawai! Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai!” he said.
He encouraged all staff and stakeholders to maintain this momentum and continue embracing unity, regardless of their backgrounds or roles.
“As we celebrate this Gawai Dayak together, let us be reminded of the beauty of unity in diversity,” he concluded.
The celebration brought together MBKS councillors, staff, and guests in a vibrant display of cultural performances, traditional food, and festive cheer, embodying the true spirit of Segulai Sejalai. — DayakDaily
