Only King’s address on May 18 Parliament sitting


KUCHING, May 13: The one-day Parliament sitting which is supposed to be held on May 18 will just feature the opening address of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof in a media statement today said he received a letter signed by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the head of the Dewan that the first meeting of the third session of the 14th Parliament will be cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation in Malaysia.

“There will be no meeting after the Yang-di-Pertuan Agong’s opening address,” he said in a statement today.


He revealed the session was only to settle government business aside from the opening of the meeting.

He explained the decision was made following the royal consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

Mohamad Ariff expounded that the changes was in accordance with Article 11 (2) and 15 (2) of the Dewan Rakyat meeting.

He added that a new notice of the first meeting for the 14th sitting for the third session will be issued to the respective member of Parliament in due course.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the first meeting of the third session for the 14th Parliament was supposed to include the declaration of the appointment of the opposition leader, the tabling of a motion on the appointment of the Parliamentary Select Committee as well as the appointment of the chairman and deputy chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Besides, two supplementary bills were also supposed to be tabled for a first reading and a motion to adjourn debate of the King’s speech.

The Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on July 13.—DayakDaily
