KUCHING, March 2: An unemployed man who impersonated a police officer and attempted to prank other policemen in Tapah was fined RM1,500 or in default one month’s imprisonment.

Wagner Sabut, 36, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 170 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of two years’ imprisonment or a fine, or both upon conviction.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar convicted him as charged.

Wagner was found guilty of impersonating a police officer from Bukit Aman at Tapah police station in Jalan Kuching-Serian, at about 3.20pm on Feb 19.

According to the brief facts of the case, a police officer from Tapah police station was the complainant after he was approached by the accused who then introduced himself as a police officer from Bukit Aman and reporting for duty at Tapah police station.

After the accused had entered the building, he introduced himself again as a police officer and said he was going to arrest the complainant.

Subsequently, the accused left the building to take a file from his car and when he went back into the building, he brought a cake and said it was only a prank.

The other police officer then asked the accused if he really was a police officer and the accused said he was a police officer from the Kuching district police Criminal Investigation Department.

Upon investigation, it was found that the accused was not a police officer and was subsequently detained by police.
