Man arrested after leading Sibu police on a nearly one-hour high-speed pursuit

SIBU, June 26: A 33-year-old man was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase for about 45-minute through the town before stopping at a dead end at Lorong Sentosa 4 here last night.

Sibu District police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit reported that police officers on patrolling duty stumbled upon a white vehicle acting suspiciously at Jalan Ling Kai Cheng at about 11.20pm.

“When the police sounded the siren ordering the car to stop, the driver accelerated towards Kampung Bahagia Jaya in Teku instead.


“The patrol team then called for reinforcement from another MPV (multipurpose vehicle) team while continuing to use loudspeakers to order the car to stop in their pursuit.

“The driver was driving dangerously and even went onto the opposite lane at Jalan Kpg Bahagia towards Jalan Pahlawan,” he said.

Jonathan added that the entire chase only stopped when the driver came to a dead end at Lorong Sentosa 4 where police had to use force to arrest the suspect who acted aggressively.

The suspect was then rushed to Sibu Hospital for a Covid-19 test screening which result returned negative.

Stanley disclosed that the suspect was also compounded RM4,000 for violating the standard operating procedures (SOP) and would be remanded for further investigations.

According to initial investigation, the suspect from Paradom was unemployed and had previous criminal records.

He will be investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing civil servants from performing their duties.
