Malaysia logs 1,294 new Covid-19 cases, 5 fatalities

KUCHING, April 2: A total of 1,294 new Covid-19 cases were reported throughout the country today with five fatalities recorded in four states.

According to Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a press statement today, of the new cases today, 26 are imported while the remaining 1,268 cases) are local transmissions.

“This brings the cumulative number of positive Covid-19 cases in the country to 347,972 cases, with 14,246 cases still active,” he said.


Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor reported the highest number of new cases today with 455 cases, followed by Sarawak with 217 cases, and Pulau Pinang with 139 cases.

“Other states which also reported new cases today are Johor (103), Kuala Lumpur (88), Kelantan (66), Sabah (63), Pahang (57), Negeri Sembilan (31), Melaka (22), Kedah (21), Perak (14), Terengganu (eight), Putrajaya (five), Labuan (four) and Perlis (one),” he added.

Dr Noor Hisham also disclosed a total of 168 cases are currently being treated in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), with 78 of them requiring respiratory assistance.

“As of today, five deaths were also reported involving Malaysians in Sarawak (two), and one each for Johor, Pulau Pinang and Sabah, bringing the cumulative deaths due to Covid-19 in the country to 1,283 (0.37 per cent),” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham revealed 10 new clusters have also been identified today involving a total of 137 individuals who tested positive for Covid-19 in six states.

He said seven of the new clusters are workplace clusters, two are community clusters, and one is a high risk group cluster.

“The clusters are the Banjaran Gading, Simpang Empat and Kalindukan clusters in Sabah, Industri Bukit Angkat and Pekan Batu clusters in Selangor, Permatang Pasir and Jalan Padang clusters in Negeri Sembilan, Jalan Bukit Nanas cluster in Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Taat cluster in Johor and Wakaf Chagak Cluster in Terengganu,” he said. — DayakDaily
