KUCHING, May 16: Construction of the new SMK Sebuyau school building will start next month, says Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
According to TVS, she said the appointment process for a contractor is expected to be completed within a week, which will pave the way for a site survey.
She added that immediate action was taken after several issues regarding the condition of the existing school were raised by Sebuyau assemblyman Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, to which she went down to see the situation of the school herself.
“As discussed at the ministerial level, immediate intervention must be carried out to ensure that the new SMK Sebuyau school project is implemented quickly,” she said during an official visit to the school in conjunction with the Teachers’ Day celebration on Thursday (May 15)
She added that the new school building will not only provide better learning facilities, but it will also address the problem of student dropout in the area.
“This new school will be equipped with more conducive dormitory facilities. We are aware that dormitories are a major factor in ensuring that students from rural areas consistently attend school,” she said.
She also emphasised that the new building aims to boost the academic and co-curricular performance of students in the Sebuyau area, in addition to taking care of the welfare of students and teachers.
During the visit, she also handed over a special contribution of RM105,000 to the school for immediate maintenance and upgrading works while waiting for the completion of the new school.
“For the time being, we are distributing RM5,000 to the Teachers’ Club, RM50,000 to upgrade and repair the teachers’ rooms, and another RM50,000 for the regular maintenance of the school building,” she said.
Meanwhile, she also expressed special appreciation to the teachers who continue to work hard to educate students despite the currently less than conducive facilities.
Last year in July, Julaihi said SMK Sebuyau will be rebuilt at a new location in Sebuyau’s new township to replace the old building, which is facing infrastructure problems.
At one point, canopy tents were set up to replace the dilapidated school hall and buildings for the use of its teachers and students. — DayakDaily
