KUCHING, Jan 7: A letter which has been circulating on social media allegedly prohibiting a mission school from organising a ‘Khatam Al-Quran’ ceremony for its Primary 6 students has sent netizens into a frenzy.
The letter addressed to the primary school headmaster dated Dec 21, 2023 was allegedly from a diocesan education officer and referred to a Majlis Khatam Al-Quran scheduled to take place in early Feb.
“We feel really uncomfortable and against our expectations to have such programme being carried out in the premises of our mission schools.
“Therefore, be informed that the Majlis Khatam Al-Quran for Year 6 students of the school is not permitted,” the letter reads.
The letter has been circulating on Facebook with many users criticising the letter.
One user named Nasir Al-Hakim commented, “Previously, we had no problem organising the event.”
Meanwhile, user Apiez Ichigo wrote, “It was said that Sarawak is the most harmonious State where people of different religions are free to practise their faith. Now, what happened? Hypocrite!”
On the other hand, user Terbang Jauh wrote, “Does the event forces non-Muslims to attend? If it is only for the Muslim students, why do we need to prohibit the event? This is a stupid mindset. When did an Islamic event would cause disharmony? Isn’t Islam the official religion of our country?”
It was also believed that the Khatam Al-Quran event will go ahead, but the location of the event will be changed and will be announced in the near future.
