KUCHING, Oct 11: Julau incumbent Datuk Larry Sng will defend the seat, though at this stage, he refuses to reveal whether he will contest under Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) or as an independent.

When contacted today, the former PBM president said he would definitely defend the seat but was noncommittal when asked if he would be standing under the party or otherwise.

Expressing confidence that he is a winnable candidate, Sng said without hesitation he is the best person to represent the people of Julau.

“I believe I am best person for the job and there is still much that needs to be done,” said Sng.

In the 2018 general election, Sng captured the seat with a majority of 1,931 votes in a straight fight against Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) candidate Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum who was the incumbent.

Sng garnered 10,105 votes while Salang polled 8,174 votes. Julau is an Iban-majority constituency where the Iban comprise up to 94 per cent of total voters.

“I found much joy and satisfaction in serving the people of Julau over the past four years, despite the multitude of challenges faced due to the large constituency and the strict Covid measures which were in place for the past two years,” said Sng.

He said there is more which can be done to improve infrastructure namely roads, Internet connectivity, clean water and stable electricity connection.

“In the four years that I have served the constituency, we have increased the WiFi connectivity in 47 areas under Jendela (Jalinan Digital Negara).

“I have proposed to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government to build a Balai Bomba (fire station), assisted companies to invest in building petrol stations in Julau and Pakan, set up an education fund and allocated RM1 million in 2022 to help secondary and primary school in infrastructure improvement,” said Sng. — DayakDaily
