Kuching to host Asia Pacific Orchid Conference

KUCHING, May 13: The 13th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference (APOC 13) will be held here for the first time ever on July 22-28 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

This prestigious event is hosted by Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and supported by the Sarawak government.

APOC 13 will feature several orchid competitions — Malaysia’s Academic Institution Orchid Landscape, Individual Orchid Plants, Container Garden and Flower Arrangement — and they are open to members of the public on a complimentary basis.

Prizes for the Container Garden Competition are available in two categories — Category A (Orchid only) and Category B (Orchid with Ornamental Plants and Decoration) — and the 1st prize winner wins RM1,000 and a plaque, 2nd prize (RM800 and plaque), and 3rd prize (RM500 and plaque).

The Orchid Landscape competition is open to all local institutions such as universities, colleges, and schools. The prizes are as follows: 1st prize (RM1,000 with plaque), 2nd prize (RM700 with plaque) and 3rd prize (RM500 with plaque).

The Flower Arrangement Competition requires the participants to compete in two categories, namely hand bouquet or table arrangement (Category 1) and photo frame arrangement or hanging arrangement or floor up arrangement (Category 2). The 1st prize winner gets RM2,000 and a plaque, 2nd prize (RM1,000 and plaque), the 3rd prize (RM500 and plaque). There will be three consolation prizes of RM150 plus a certificate each.

Individuals and organisations who are interested to compete in the Container Garden Competition, Orchid Landscape and Flower Arrangement Competition are to register before May 31.

As for the Individual Orchid Plant Competition, there will be prizes for Best In Section (RM500 and plaque), Best Hybrid in Show (RM2,500 and plaque), Best Species in Show (RM2,500 and plaque) and the Grand Champion (RM5,000 and plaque). Ribbons are awarded for first, second and third placing within classes. The closing date for participation for this competition is July 22.

These competitions will take place on July 22 and the judging will be on July 23 at BCCK.
