KUCHING, Sept 3: The Kuching High Court today ordered the Malaysian government and Election Commission (EC) to implement Undi18 amendments by Dec 31 this year.
Quashing the government and EC’s decision to delay Undi18 to 2022 from its promised date in July, 2021, judicial commissioner Alexander Siew How Wai ruled in favour of five Sarawakian youths who had challenged the government under former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Siew also ruled that the government and EC’s action was “irrational, illegal, disproportionate, and amounts to voter suppression”.
The Undi18 exercise will lower the minimum voting age from 21 years old to 18 years old, and allow approximately 125,000 to 135,000 Sarawakians aged 18 to 20 to vote in the coming Sarawak State Elections. — Dayakdaily
