Schoolteachers narrowly save vehicles from rising floodwaters at SK Morek in Baram

Rising floodwaters have also hit Kampung Long Atip Baram.

MIRI, Sept 3: 20 teachers and staff of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Morek scrambled to save 15 vehicles, moving them to higher ground as floodwaters crept into the school on Thursday night (Sept 2).

According to the primary school’s headmaster, Dom Dawin Jangin, their swift action managed to sav all 15 vehicles from the rising floods at around 11pm.


“The water inundated 80 per cent of the school compound and cut off road access to the school,” he said.

The school and seven others in Ulu Baram have been experiencing heavy rains since yesterday evening.

Those seven schools are SK Long Wat Baram, SK Long Panai Baram , SK Long Loyang, SK Long Jegan, SK Kuala Bok,SK Long Ikang and SK long Laput.

Meanwhile, this year’s floods has been described as the worst that has ever hit Kampung Long Atip Baram.

This is reportedly the fifth time that the village has been struck by floods in 2021.

Two other villages in Baram which were flooded are Kampung Long Wat and Long Sobeng.

However, no flood victims have been evacuated so far as the situation is still under control, disclosed Miri Fire and Rescue department (Bomba) Zone Six chief Supt Law Poh Kiong. — DayakDaily
