KUCHING, May 29: Five families from Kampung Tabuan Dayak Paya who lost their homes in a fire earlier this month are waiting for their slots under Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) in Demak Laut.

According to Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Batu Lintang chairman Sih Hua Tong, his team has helped the victims to fill out the forms and submit them to Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

“The forms are now being processed,” he told reporters after presenting food aid to the fire victims in a simple ceremony held at village chief Ongom Gudy’s residence in Kampung Tabuan Dayak Paya today.

Sih further said that what’s more important is for the fire victims to prepare for their applications’ approval.

“They are now in the recovery phase where they will return to work, and the children will return to school.

“So we have to help them settle down with their daily necessities such as kitchen supplies, gas cylinders, and others.

“The victims have received a lot of help and donations from Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKM), Green Road Development and Security Committee (JKKK), SUPP, other villagers and the general public,” he added.

On May 7, three houses involving five families were razed by fire at around 9.30pm at Kampung Tabuan Dayak Paya.

The 33 victims, including six children aged between 6 months and 12 years, have taken shelter in various places.
