Kenyalang Park ‘hops’ back to life with CNY bazaar

KUCHING, Jan 7: Kenyalang Park is once again bustling with activities as the once-a-year Chinese New Year (CNY) Bazaar has returned with long stretches of stalls and festive lights decorations strung up along the streets.

From Chinese New Year goodies like pineapple tarts and bak kwa (dried meat snack) to festive decorations like lanterns and flowers, the bazaar is well-stocked with everything needed to prepare for the Spring Festival celebrations that are only two weeks away.

Chinese New Year 2023 falls on Jan 22, the year of the Rabbit, specifically, the Water Rabbit.

The festive fair at Kenyalang Park, featuring 225 stalls, including the existing shops, will last for 16 days until Jan 21.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the number of traders from the diverse community in Kuching has increased compared to last year.

“It is a positive sign of economic recovery after the (Covid-19) pandemic, and this festive bazaar provides a platform for shop owners and outside traders to do business.

“It is economic opportunities created for our Sarawakians to earn extra income. I hope to see more people participating in small businesses like this as we continue to assist and contribute to economic recovery,” he told reporters after officiating the start of the Kenyalang Park CNY Bazaar this evening.

Wee also commended traders and entrepreneurs for their creativity in creating festive goodies and attractive packaging.

“So we hope to set up such a bazaar from time to time so that they will be able to showcase the local products,” he added.
