KUCHING, March 8: Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has called for collective efforts to enhance the safety of water transport services in Sarawak, particularly in Kapit, following a tragic boating incident.
Nanta expressed his sadness upon learning that four individuals, including two civilians and two policemen, were still missing after a boating incident at Sungai Batang Baleh near SK Lepong Baleh in Kapit yesterday.
In a statement, Nanta emphasised the importance of water transport operators taking their responsibilities seriously to ensure that all passengers and crew adhere to appropriate safety measures.
“While search and rescue (SAR) personnel are actively conducting search operations in the area, it is imperative that all stakeholders work together to improve the safety of water transport services,” he said.
Nanta, who also serves as the Works Minister, extended his heartfelt prayers to the families of the victims and urged them to remain patient during this challenging time.
He assured that his office is closely monitoring the situation and providing assistance to those affected by the incident.
In addition, Nanta advised all passengers, especially non-swimmers, to prioritise safety by wearing life jackets while using water transport.
According to Kapit District Police Chief Deputy Superintendent Rohana Nanu, the two missing policemen were transporting 35 kilograms of explosives from Kuching to Ng Tulie, Kapit, at the time of the incident.
Rohana explained that the two missing policemen were Sergeant Jonathan Lambet from the Welfare Unit and Constable Iskandar Ibrahim from the Arms Unit at Police Headquarters (IPD) Kapit.
Meanwhile, Sibu Zone Fire and Rescue Chief Andy Alie confirmed that one victim, identified as 47-year-old Moses Ngui, was successfully rescued by a civilian.
However, two civilians, Amerson John Nain and Jack Balan, remain missing. — DayakDaily
