KUCHING, April 21: The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has rolled out its first large-scale tax compliance operation in Sarawak—Op Rejang—aimed at cracking down on 1,168 high-risk cases involving sectors such as the shadow economy, diesel smuggling, construction and wholesale trade.

Running from April 21 to 25, the operation mobilises 276 IRB officers across Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri, with cooperation from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), news portal The Edge reported.

According to IRB chief executive officer Datuk Dr Abu Tariq Jamaluddin, Op Rejang builds on the momentum of Op Borneo 1.0, and is also focused on promoting long-term tax compliance through educational efforts, particularly on the use of e-Invoicing.

During the five-day operation, non-compliant taxpayers will receive notices, while dormant companies will be verified and cross-checked with tax records.

Op Borneo 1.0, carried out in May 2024, saw 317 officers deployed in similar cities, where IRB audited both corporate and individual taxpayers, issued legal notices and addressed outstanding stamp duties. — DayakDaily
