KUCHING, Oct 1: An Indonesian national was today sentenced to two years in prison by the Magistrates’ Court here after pleading guilty to possessing child sexual abuse material on his mobile phone last month.
The 21-year-old admitted to the charge read before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali, who ordered the custodial sentence to take immediate effect.
According to the charge, he was found in possession of the material stored on an iPhone 11 Pro Max during a raid at a rented room along Jalan Datuk Stephen Kalong Ningkan at about 8.15am on Sept 23.
The offence falls under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine not exceeding RM10,000, or both upon conviction.
Investigations revealed that a police team, acting on intelligence from the MICAC D11 Bukit Aman unit, uncovered child pornographic content in the accused’s device during the operation, leading to his arrest.
In a separate case before the Sessions Court, the man was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for entering Malaysia without valid travel documents.
He was charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963, punishable under Section 6(3) of the same Act, for committing the offence on the same day as his arrest for the possession case.
Judge Musli Abdul Hamid ordered the prison term to run from the date of his arrest.
