Hunter dies from gunshot injury in Kanowit

KANOWIT, Feb 21: A 30-year-old man died after he was believed to have accidentally shot himself while hunting with four friends in the Latong forest, Machan near here, last night.

Kanowit District Police Chief, DSP Tega Bilong said the man passed away while receiving treatment at the Kanowit Hospital emergency unit at 11.15pm.

“Earlier, the victim and four friends went to the forest at around 8pm. After a few minutes, the four friends suddenly heard the sound of gunfire from the direction of the victim who was then about 10 metres away from them,” he said.

The four ran towards the victim. They were shocked to find him covered with blood. They suspected that he might have accidentally shot himself.

“They rushed him in a vehicle to Kanowit Hospital. However, the victim was pronounced dead by the hospital authority soon after,” Tega added.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the man was believed to have shot himself accidentally with a shotgun which belonged to one of his friend’s grandfather.

The hunter’s body was taken to the Sibu Hospital Mortuary by the police for further action.

“The case is classified as sudden death and further investigations are still underway,” Tega added. — DayakDaily
