He said this matter was conveyed to him by Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata during his visit to the region recently.

“…a police report was lodged and a preliminary investigation was promptly conducted to identify those involved.

“During the briefing, I was informed by the Sarawak Police Commissioner about the involvement of a police officer.

“An investigation paper has been opened concerning the case; that is all I can confirm for now,” he said.

On Sept 23, a soldier identified as Corporal Petrus Linggi Liman, 29, was undergoing training in the forest at Batu 5, Jalan Balak Multiplus, Song, when he was shot by a civilian who was hunting around 2.45am.

He was injured in the waist and left thigh.

The victim was taken to Kapit Hospital but was confirmed dead at 7.43am.

On Sept 24, the Malaysian Army revealed that the platoon the victim was in, was resting when they heard a motorcycle going through a trail near their location at about 2.45am.

The sound of what they believed was a gunshot rang out from the direction of the motorcycle.

Suspicious of the sound, a perimeter inspection was conducted immediately, and the victim who was injured due to the gunshot was discovered.

On Sept 25, the police disclosed that they had arrested two local men, both aged 31, and confiscated a shotgun and seed type ammunition.

Both suspects were found to be carrying out illegal hunting activity and one of them had fired a shot towards the victim who was mistaken as a wild animal.
