Habitual offender with history of mental illness claims trial to car theft charge

KUCHING, June 23: The Sessions Court allowed a habitual offender with schizophrenia to be released on bail of RM2,000 with two local sureties.

Chong Liang Hung, 46, was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code for robbery, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of twenty years and liable to fine or with whipping, upon conviction.


The case was first mentioned on May 5, 2021, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge framed. Sessions Court Judge Maris Agan allowed him to be released on court bail of RM20,000.

Today, Chong through his counsel, Abdul Rahman Mohd Hazmi informed the Court that he suffered from schizophrenia since 2013 and asked the Court to reduce his bail.

Judge Maris then allowed the accused to be released on court bail of RM2,000 with two local sureties.

Chong was charged with stealing a Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.5AT at the Emart Batu Kawa parking lot, at about 4.25pm on March 21, 2021.

In 2000, Chong was convicted of stealing four cars and was sentenced to imprisonment of sixteen years. — DayakDaily
