Habitual offender gets six months’ jail for break-in, theft

KUCHING, Aug 3: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a habitual offender to 6 months’ imprisonment for house break-in and stealing a digital camera, cooking gas cylinder and CCTV camera.

Sarmin Kelang, 23, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 457 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.


Section 457 of the Penal Code carries a maximum imprisonment of 14 years or with fine, or both, upon conviction.

The magistrate ordered the sentence start from today.

Sarmin was chargd with breaking into a house belonging to a 22-year-old man at Satria Jaya, BDC Stampin, at about 7.37am on July 12, 2022.

According to the brief facts of the case, when the victim arrived at his house that morning, he realised that his house was in chaos and after checking his CCTV footage, he found that someone had broken into his house.

CCTV footage recorded showed the perpetrator taking away a few items, including a digital camera, cooking gas cylinder and a CCTV camera, causing a loss of about RM1,000.

The accused had a few previous criminal records, which includes car and motorcycle theft, drug offences, and house break-ins.
