SIBU, Nov 11: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for the P211 Lanang seat, Wong Ching Yong, pledged to donate his MP salary to five Chinese independent schools here if he wins in the 15th General Election (GE15).

He listed the five schools as Catholic High School, Wong Nai Siong Secondary School, Guong Ming Secondary, Thien King Secondary School, and Citizens Middle School.

“If the people of Lanang elect me as their MP, I will donate my MP salary for five years to all five schools even though the State government is giving quite a big sum every year to these schools. But I would like to use this amount for the welfare of the teachers and staff of these schools,” said Wong at a press conference today.

He said he would open a separate account to deposit his MP salary, and every year before Chinese New Year, it would be presented to the five schools.

“This pledge is part and parcel of my election manifesto. I have met with the chairman of the Sarawak United Association of Chinese School Boards of Management, Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau, and he said he fully supports my pledge,” he said.

Wong also invited Lanang incumbent MP, Alice Lau of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), to do the same should she retain the seat.

The Lanang seat is a four-cornered fight, with the other two candidates being Prescilla Lau of Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) and Independent Datuk Wong Tiing Kiong.

Present at the press conference were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, Sibu Rural District Council chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, and several longhouse chiefs. — DayakDaily
