KUCHING, May 21: The Sarawak government remains committed to supporting the organisation of regattas across the State, offering financial assistance through the Tourism Event Grant, which organisers may apply for to facilitate the successful hosting of these culturally significant events.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting stressed that the government welcomes proposals aimed at improving the coordination of regatta events—particularly smaller-scale ones—and supports a review of existing regulations to further enhance safety for both participants and the public.
“Regatta is the oldest water sport in Sarawak and continues to attract many visitors with its unique blend of tradition, thrilling sportsmanship, and vibrant atmosphere.
“The organisation of a regatta depends on river conditions and local factors, while the event categories and boat types are shaped by cultural practices rooted in local traditions,” he said.
To support the planning and execution of regatta events, Ting explained that the Divisional Tourism Task Group (DTTG) was established to coordinate tourism-related programmes and projects at the divisional level, including regattas.
“The DTTG also promotes community participation through various complementary activities such as food fairs, handicraft and local product sales, homestay packages, and local tour offerings,” he said in response to Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri during the question-and-answer session in the august House today.
Ting reminded organisers that they must adhere to government guidelines, including securing approval from the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB).
“Safety remains a top priority. Organisers are required to assess the physical condition of the river, form dedicated safety teams involving agencies such as SRB, the Marine Police, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), and ensure that all participants wear life jackets and comply with safety protocols,” he added.
Eight regatta events are currently listed in the 2025 Sarawak Tourism Calendar:
- Pesta Saratok (July 11–13)
- Pesta Sebauh (July 19–20)
- Regatta Belaga (August 3–10)
- Regatta Baram (September 18–21)
- Pesta Besaug Dalat (September 26–28)
- Regatta Telaga Air (October 3–5)
- Sarawak Regatta – Kuching Waterfront Festival (October 31–November 2)
- Regatta Lingga (November 28–30)
Ting said regattas are more than just sporting events — they serve as vital drivers of local socio-economic development, generating opportunities for food vendors, local entrepreneurs, transport operators, restaurants, handicraft sellers, and homestay providers. — DayakDaily
