SIBU, Oct 22: Between 30 to 40 per cent of government doctors, especially young ones in the country are facing some form of workplace bullying and harassment.

Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Sarawak Branch chairman Dr Liew Shan Fap said this was revealed in a recent survey conducted by MMA’s Division of Trainees, Medical Officers and Medical Specialists (SCHOMOS).

“We have to take this very seriously and find a solution to improve the situation.

“I would say that MMA is an important resource for all doctors to get help and support when doctors have problems.

“In MMA we have HelpDoc and all doctors can make complaints or issues encountered in the HelpDoc channel,” he said at the 51st Anniversary Dinner of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Sarawak Branch here last night.

Dr Liew also emphasised that all doctors should take care of their personal health, including physical, mental and emotional health so that they can provide better care services to the patients.

Meanwhile, he said that 60 years after the formation of Malaysia, Sarawak has yet to achieve healthcare equity and equality, especially for people living in rural areas.

“We must emphasise efforts to bridge the gap in healthcare delivery and ensure the accessibility of better quality healthcare services for all.

“We need specific policies and funding to achieve better healthcare services in rural areas,” he stressed.

According to him, the process will be accelerated if Sarawak can obtain health autonomy according to Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Therefore, Dr Liew gave his assurance that MMA Sarawak will fully support the State government’s efforts to achieve health autonomy.

Among those present were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
