KUCHING, April 8: A 40-year-old worker was fortunate to survive after losing a large amount of blood due to a severe injury he suffered during a workplace incident, all thanks to a sufficient supply provided by the Sarawak General Hospital’s (SGH) Blood Bank.

Sharing one of the many real life stories SGH’s Accident and Emergency Department deals with on a daily basis, the Blood Bank explained that after going into hypovolemic shock – a life-threatening condition when the body begins to shut down after losing a large amount of blood – the victim required a massive blood transfusion.

Thanks to the quick response of the doctors and medical personnel on duty, as well as a sufficient supply of blood at the Blood Bank, the man’s life was saved.

Calling on the public to keep donating to ensure a steady supply of quality blood needed in health facilities throughout Sarawak, SGH’s Blood Bank reiterated that donating blood saves lives, and could make all the difference in such an emergency.

One pint of donated blood can save up to three lives. The donated blood can be processed to produce red blood cells, plasma and platelets.

The simple, generous act of giving blood can help patients like the 40-year-old worker who had serious injuries.

SGH Blood Bank also reported that the total blood collection in March through various campaigns held in Kuching and Kota Samarahan was 2,255 pints, exceeding its target of 2,030 pints.

A blood donation drive in collaboration with Liansin is taking place at Boulevard Shopping Mall (in front of Daiso) tomorrow (April 9) starting at 9am to 2pm.

Meanwhile, the SGH Blood Bank was closed for the Good Friday public holiday yesterday (April 7) and will resume operations as usual on April 10. — DayakDaily
