BINTULU, May 8: The accumulation of garbage polluting Ria Beach in Tanjung Batu not only mars the natural beauty of the area but also raises serious concerns about Bintulu’s reputation as a clean and tourist-friendly destination.

In a TVS news report, Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang described the situation as critical, calling for immediate action from all relevant parties.

“I believe much of this waste was brought in by the recent floods, and the resulting scene is undeniably unsightly.

“This morning, I summoned the relevant agencies to the site to find solutions, because while we are working hard to make Bintulu a clean town, situations like this severely damage that image,” he said following a site inspection at Ria Beach today.

Pang also expressed concern that the pollution could have wider implications—not only for the environment but for Sarawak’s reputation—if images or videos were to go viral on social media.

“If this is shared widely on platforms like Facebook or other social media, it could negatively affect the image of our state and country. That’s why we are taking a more proactive approach.

“Whenever we detect issues like this, we immediately mobilise the relevant agencies to the ground to address the problem. It’s a very urgent matter,” he added.

He further highlighted the long-term risks to public health and marine life caused by the accumulation of plastic and unmanaged waste along the coast.

Pang disclosed that the District Office, in collaboration with relevant agencies, will coordinate a follow-up action plan to tackle the garbage disposal issue in a more comprehensive and effective manner. — DayakDaily
