Foreign national sentenced 17 years for murder of countryman in Miri

MIRI, Dec 18: A 40-year-old foreign national, Sibal Hamid, was sentenced for 17 years by the Miri Sessions Court today for the murder of a compatriot at the Miri Airport on February 12, 2023.

Judge Azreena Aziz sentenced Sibal, a Suluk, after he was convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, following the reduction of his charge from murder.

The offence took place in a vacant area near Gate 14, Miri Airport, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Ihsan Jallaludin led the prosecution.

The fatal incident occurred on February 12, 2023, when Sibal allegedly killed his fellow countryman.

Initially charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, the charge was later reduced to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The accused was also charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for having no valid pass or permit to stay in Malaysia.

The prosecution, led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Ihsan Jalalludin, established that Sibal was responsible for the death of his compatriot, referred to in court as ‘Mr X.’ The accused was unrepresented during the proceedings.
