Fisherman’s hand severed in Pulau Bruit fishing accident, rescued by Maritim Malaysia

KUCHING, May 9: A fisherman sustained a severe injury resulting in the loss of his right hand after it was caught in a winch wire cable while operating fishing equipment off the coast of Pulau Bruit on Wednesday night (May 7).

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritim Malaysia), through its Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Kuching, swiftly coordinated a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) to rescue the victim from the sea.

Tanjung Manis Maritime Zone director, Maritime Commander Mahkos Juing, said the 26-year-old victim, from Bintangor, was injured at around 8.30pm during the lifting of a trawl board when his hand became entangled in the winch system.

“The skipper immediately contacted the Tanjung Manis Maritime Zone for emergency assistance,” he said in a statement last night.

Maritime patrol boat PETIR 82 was deployed at 9.45pm and successfully transferred the injured fisherman to the Tanjung Manis Passenger Terminal Jetty at 1.05am.

He was then rushed to the Tanjung Manis Health Clinic in an ambulance from the Civil Defence Force (APM).

As of the time of reporting, the victim is in stable condition following emergency treatment.
