KUCHING, Sept 8: Malaysian Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Dato Seri Tiong King Sing will meet with Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor following a recent sinking boat tragedy in Semporna which killed a tourist.
He was referring to a sinking boat incident in Timba-Timba Island involving nine foreign tourists at approximately 10.10am on Sept 4, where a 38-year-old man drowned while eight others were rescued.
Tiong said the incident certainly caused concern for foreign tourists regarding the safety aspect in Malaysia, just like the incident in Kudat at the end of July last year, which caused a foreign tourist to die due to drowning.
āThus, I opined that it is important for the Ministry to take proactive action by holding a thorough discussion with the Sabah Chief Minister, including the Sabah Tourism Board.
āAmong the important matters to be reviewed are related to the guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOP) for safety aspect especially involving risky water activities in Sabah such as snorkelling, scuba diving, and kayaking,ā he said in a statement yesterday. ā DayakDaily
