KUCHING, May 7: A 40-year-old female proprietor of an event studio pleaded not guilty to charges of accepting deposits without the necessary license under the Financial Services Act 2013 in court today.

Appearing before the Magistrate Court in Kuching, the accused, Pui, faced accusations of accepting deposits totaling RM1,000,000 for organising the ‘Borneo Musical Festival Live 2022’ from an entertainment company without the required license.

The charges against Pui stemmed from three instances where she, through her company, accepted deposits without the necessary license.

The first charge, dated May 31, 2021, saw Pui accepting a deposit of RM200,000.

The second charge, dated July 9, 2021, involved a deposit of RM250,000, while the third charge, dated Sept 30, 2021, amounted to RM250,000.

Each charge accuses Pui of violating Section 10 of the Financial Services Act 2013 and thereby committing an offense under Section 137(1) of the same Act.

The court scheduled the next mention date for June 13 and released the accused on cash bail of RM20,000 and court bail of RM20,000.

In a separate case, Pui faced an additional charge of accepting a deposit of RM300,000 for the same event on Dec 31, 2021.

The charge mirrored the previous ones, accusing Pui of accepting a deposit without the required license under the Financial Services Act 2013.

The punishment for this offense, as outlined in Section 137(2) of the Financial Services Act, could also result in imprisonment for up to 10 years, a fine not exceeding RM50,000,000, or both. — DayakDaily
