KUCHING, Aug 30: Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall will be holding a Lantern Fabrication Competition to promote cultural arts and activities of the Mid-Autumn Festival at the mall on Sept 6.
Themed ‘Intercultural Mooncake Festival’, the competition is organised in conjunction with the 18th Kuching Inter-Cultural Mooncake Festival (KIMF) to be held from Sept 6 to 13 at Carpenter Street here.
KIMF co-organising chairman Sim Kiang Chiok, in a media release today, disclosed that each entry for the lantern making competition must be put up for display for the duration of the festival to enable public viewing and appreciation.
The competition is open for all nationalities, associations and schools to participate as individual or as groups. There is not limit to the number of entries.
As for the requirements of the lantern’s design, its height and width should not exceed one cubic metre and participants are encouraged to use their creativity and imagination for the designs but black and white design will not be accepted.
On the scoring criteria, the components to be assessed include 25 per cent on method or skills, 25 percent on the theme, 25 percent on colours, and 25 percent on effect.
Winners of the competition stand a chance to bag home RM300 for first place, RM200 second place, RM100 third place and five consolation prizes of RM50 each.
Closing date for registration to participate in the lantern competition is Sept 4.
Participants are required to submit the lanterns to Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall before 7pm on the Sept 6. Entries will be reviewed on the same day at 8pm.
The prize presentation ceremony will be held on Sept 13 at the mall’s main stage at 8pm.
