Elderly man claims trial to charge of obstruction of duty

MIRI, 9 Dec: An elderly man, aged 71, pleaded not guilty at the Miri Court here on Friday to a charge of obstructing an enforcement team from Miri City Council from discharging their duties.

The accused, Hii Tiong Huat, from Lorong Mantis, Sibu, made the plea after the charge was read out to him before Magistrate Nazira Adlin Ahmad Khairul Razi.

Hii was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of not more than two years or a maximum fine of RM10,000 or both upon conviction.

According to the charge sheet, Hii, who was wearing an advertisement board displaying the words ‘Tulen Jade’ (authentic jade) was purposely obstructing the city council enforcement team from discharging their duties when the accused refused to follow their instruction to disperse.

The incident occurred at a road divider in front of the Bintang Megamall on Dec 7 this year at 9.31am.

During the incident, Hii had allegedly shouted provocative words at the enforcement team.

Magistrate Nazira has fixed Jan 11 next year for the trial.

Hii was not represented, while Sub-Inspector Ramping Jimbai appeared for the prosecution. — DayakDaily
