KUCHING, Sept 11: An e-hailing driver was fined RM30,000 by the Sessions Court here today for tampering with an electricity meter to dishonestly consume electrical energy.
Wong Siew Siong, 41, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which stipulates a maximum penalty of RM100,000 in fines, imprisonment up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
Judge Musli Ab Hamid ordered a fine of RM30,000 or in default to two years in prison.
The incident occurred on September 9, 2020, at a residential property registered under Wong’s name located on Jalan Kong Ping.
The meter tampering was detected when a team from Syarikat Sesco Berhad conducted a routine inspection of the electricity meter and wiring system at the said residence. During their examination, they detected irregularities in the meter, which raised suspicions.
Among the discrepancies discovered were tampering with the terminal cover seals and meter grip lock seals, as well as the presence of an imitation base cover on the electricity meter.
These findings led to the dismantling and confiscation of the compromised meter, followed by the installation of a new one with secure seals at the premises.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Aiman Nabila Alwi and Fuad Ahmad prosecuted while Wong was represented by counsel Hii Yiik Yew. — DayakDaily
