Driver fined RM10,000 for illegal gambling

KUCHING, Sept 14: A man was fined RM10,000 for illegally gambling at a coffee shop.

The man, 63, who works as a driver in an assistant minister’s office, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.


Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi accepted his plea and sentenced him to a fine of RM10,000 or in default to six months’ imprisonment.

The accused was charged with playing an online gambling game on his smartphone at a coffee shop in Jalan Gold Jade, at about 2pm on August 30, 2021.

He was charged under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine between RM10,000 to RM100,000 for every gaming machine seized and liable to imprisonment not exceeding five years, upon conviction.
