KUCHING, March 13: Following Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) defeat in yesterday’s Johor elections, Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii is urging the coalition to rethink its strategy and enlist the youth as change agents.
He warned that unless progressive forces become united, Malaysia would devolve into a failed state.
“But even in this bleak moment, there is a glimpse of hope towards a real renewal that our nation and our people crucially need—more young people are realising that their voice matters in determining our country’s future,” he said in a statement today.
Dr Yii went on to say that PH’s electoral defeat in Johor was a wake-up call for the party.
“To do things differently, we must bring fresh perspectives to the table. PH needs to lay the groundwork to build a cohesive youth movement leading up to the next general election (GE15),” he stated.
Dr Yii, who is contested as a Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate in Batu Kawah in the last Sarawak election, emphasised the importance of this movement to be inclusive, creative, and capable of communicating ideas and policies on issues affecting youth such as education, employment, and housing.
“Such a movement must be a collective effort to reach out, engage, listen and, more importantly, get the youth involved and even possibly take important political leadership posts,” he said.
Dr Yii acknowledged that the task would be difficult, but it was necessary to pave the way for a better future for all Malaysians.
“This renewal starts with us. Young Malaysians will be the bridge that connects disparate groups, energising them into a potent and cohesive force to build a better future,” he opined. — DayakDaily
