KUCHING, Aug 5: About 200 Sarawakian doctors have benefited from scholarships offered by Yayasan Sarawak since 2017.
Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the Yayasan Sarawak special scholarship, which runs for five years under University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), would enable the doctors to serve in rural areas throughout the State.
“This programme will finish this year and will be extended for another five years,” said Dr Sim in a video posted on his Facebook page on Aug 3.
Dr Sim noted that the Sarawak government also spends about RM300 million a year to provide education for Sarawakians.
“Over the last 15 years, more than a million Sarawakians have benefited from this education programme,” he added.
Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, pointed out that there are currently two types of scholarships available for Sarawakians to further their studies: the Tun Abdul Rahman and Tun Taib scholarships.
Apart from that, he said, the Sarawak government also offers study loans for Sarawakians available in any Sarawak government-linked university.
He also said there is another type of study loan for Sarawakians pursuing their post-graduate studies, including those studying overseas.
“For study loans, first-class honour achievers will only need to pay back 25 per cent of the loan, while for second class-honour achievers, they only need to pay back 50 per cent,” he explained. — DayakDaily
