KAPIT, Aug 5: A 10-year-old boy, Jenggut Antas, is feared to have drowned when the longboat he was travelling on with his family capsized after colliding with another vessel today in Kapit.

According to Kapit Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Timothy Barat, the family of four were on their way to Kapit town when the incident occurred.

“Their outboard engine suddenly broke down, causing it to drift and later hit a vessel anchored at the riverbank, ” he said.

When the boat capsized, three of them — the victim’s parents and sibling — managed to save themselves while the victim was swept away by the strong current.

“All of them know how to swim, but because of the strong current, the victim was swept away,” he added, advising those travelling by boat to put on life jackets for their safety.

Firemen had launched a search and rescue operation for the boy. — DayakDaily
