SIBU, Jan 20: Members of the public have been encouraged to donate English books to a donation drive to collect 11,000 books for children in the rural areas of the Nangka constituency.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, who is also Nangka assemblyman, said this is to help foster the reading culture in students from an early age.
“Without reading, one cannot gain knowledge. The culture of reading should be instilled among students from an early age for them to master the English language,” he said during the launching of the book donation drive at Farley Supermarket today.
He added that last year, Farley Foundation donated 1,000 books to rural residents in his constituency; this time, they are increasing it to 11,000.
“We are asking the public to donate English language books, whether bought or used, where they can keep them in boxes specially prepared by Yayasan Farley, which are placed in all branches in Sibu, Kuching, and Bintulu,” he said.
He also added that the Nangka service centre would place donation boxes in shopping centres around town.
