KUCHING, Dec 10: There must be a comprehensive study before a master plan to redevelop the riverine village of Kampung Kudei Baru in Satok can be devised, says Satok assemblyman Dato Ibrahim Baki.

Ibrahim, who acknowledged the challenge of congestion at Kampung Kudei Baru and its surrounding areas in the future, added such a master plan could only be in place once there is a proper discussion with the community, its leaders and the authorities.

“Only after this discussion will we have details in bringing proper proposed paperwork to develop this master plan. With this study and discussion, it would be much easier for the next steps of action.

“There could be a possibility of moving the entire village to a new area or building a new residential apartment. This kind of decision and arrangement may cause some disagreement among the residents,” he said at the ‘Segulai Sejalai’ Pre-Christmas Gathering at the Kampung Kudei Baru community hall here today.

Ibrahim elaborated that such congestion in urban villages is occurring not only in Kampung Kudei Baru and in Satok, but in many others parts of Sarawak.

“I am optimistic the Sarawak government is looking into all of these issues to resolve this residential congestion in urban areas,” he said.

He also hoped that the implementation of a big pipe project costing some RM1.7 million could solve the water supply issue in the area.

“The authority will soon widen and resurface the village road. They will tar-seal it and solve parking (problems) and uneven surface.

“The village is a peaceful community. I urge the residents to continue the goodwill of good spirit and to respect each other’s culture, race and religion as we live in unity and harmony,” said Ibrahim.

The riverine Iban village of Kampung Kudei Baru has a population of 400 people.

Ibrahim later presented Christmas gifts to children, people with disabilities (PWD) and senior citizens during the event.
