KUCHING, May 13: Sarawakian Dr Alan Fong Yean Yip, being a member of the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC) Global Heart Attack Treatment Initiative (GHATI) 2025-2026 Workgroup, shows that the world is recognising Sarawak’s local talents.
In a Facebook post, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian posted a screenshot of a Tweet posted by the ACC on May 10, which showed Dr Fong highlighting the ACC’s GHANI as an opportunity for institutions in low- to middle-income countries to improve heart attack care.
Dr Sim, who is a cardiologist himself, expressed how proud he felt of Dr Fong’s role.
“From the jungle of Borneo, we share with the world. The best of ‘glocal’ (a combination of the words ‘global’ and ‘local’)—global quality impact by local talent action—calling Sarawak home.
“Always felt so proud and motivated to do more when you see our fellow Sarawakians and Malaysians are recognised for their talents professionally on the world stage,” he said.

Dr Sim said that after he was appointed the International Governor for ACC (Asia-Pacific), Dr Fong was the next Malaysian to hold any post in the ACC.
“Thanks, ACC, not just for the recognition but also for the opportunity,” said Dr Sim.
As part of the ACC’s GHATI 2025-2026 Workgroup, Dr Fong has joined the ranks of fellow cardiologists from India, Brazil, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Egypt, the Republic of Srpska, and Ethiopia.
According to the National Specialist Register, Dr Fong obtained his degree from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom in 1999 before moving on to the Royal College of Physicians in London in 2004 for his specialist degree.
He is also president of the National Heart Association of Malaysia (NHAM). — DayakDaily
